I am a member of the Primary Prevention Team and I use this quote in my presentations on Wellness. It is kind of an "aha!" moment for many people and I have been asked to share it. I figured this is a good venue for that.
"Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls.
The balls are called work, family, health, friends and integrity.
And you’re keeping all of them in the air.
But one day, you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball.
If you drop it, it will bounce bac…

On July 2nd, 2009 I started an amazing journey. It began in Ottawa where I met the team of 5 other Canadian teachers that I would be traveling with to Ghana, Africa. After a fabulous 3 day in-service at the Canadian Teachers' Federation that focused on team building and inter-cultural effectiveness, we were on our way to Africa.
In the capital city of Accra we met with our Ghanaian co-tutors (and almost met President Barack Obama as our time in Accra coincided with his visit) and prepared our l…

Four days ago, an attendee at the Open Education Conference in Vancouver tweeted “are you supposed to get choked up about an academic conference?” He said he was finding it hard not to feel emotional on the last day of Opened09.
Well, I was pretty emotional, as well, when I capped off an intensely rewarding conference experience at
Building Learning Communities 2009 (BLC09) in Boston three weeks ago.
I wasn’t misty-eyed, just so ja…

Anyone who expected Research in Motion (RIM) co-CEO Jim Balsillie to talk about his company’s recently launched app store or his multi-million dollar bid to move the Phoenix Coyotes to Hamilton would have noticed the omissions at today’s Manitoba Chambers of Commerce luncheon.
But the BlackBerry mogul who spoke to a crowd of nearly 300 at the Delta Winnipeg--and was introduced as the “most competitive man in the room”--had some truly interesting points to make about, of all things, Canadian for…

An amazing day at the NEA, thanks largely to David Edwards, a sharp young international relations staffer and the wonderful Jill Christianson—also from IR.
David picked me up at the hotel and walked with me a few hundred metres to NEA headquarters. From then on I felt like royalty—my hosts were that genial.
I was introduced as the guest from the Canadian Teachers' Federation and thanked, tongue in cheek, for allowing the conference to be tagged as truly international.
The presentations—not a…

What do you think when you see the White House on CNN? A stately, majestic icon of American power? Do you imagine lengthy motorcades and heavy security? Do you think about the weighty decisions made there which have projected power around the globe?
Well I suppose it's all that.
And heading up a half dozen blocks on 16th St. toward 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue I imagined the landmark to be portentous and imposing--just like in the establishing shots on the nightly news. But this warm and windless…

I am going to be interviewed on Thursday by CBC news along with my kids about their Lunar Base projects they built for their space unit and my acceptance into the Space Academy program for Educators at the US Space and Rocket Research Center in Huntsville , Alabama. It is from June 20 - 26, 2009. There will be 272 people from 90 countries, and 45 US states. I am one of 10 Canadians chosen to go and the only Manitoban. Everything from my tuition, flight, food, accomodations and materials is all p…

In a word, the theme flowing through the CMA’s Digital Marketing conference I attended this morning was relationships.
And what a stellar line-up to tell us about them.
First,
Rahaf Harfoush with her engaging re-telling of her three-month ride with Obama's social media team. Next, the wonderful, hyper-caffeinated branding presentation by professor Fang Wan from the I.H. Asper School of Business. And at day’s end, the sharp and informal VJ turned soci…

I am puzzled as to how Manitoba's teachers are supposed to implement the ICT continuum to the best of their abilities while divisional school boards have blocked educationally sound websites because of keywords in their url. How can I filter through information and help show my students how to evaluate sources of information if I can't go to half the websites I want to?
I recently visited a colleague in a different division and found out that the grass isn't greener on the other side. Google Do…

I’ve never been one to trash talk the media. They’re largely level-headed folks who want to do a good job and—like the rest of us—be recognized for it.
But sometimes you’ve got to wonder how they mess up so badly.
A recent discussion that CJOB’s Charles Adler had with a media law professor from Edmonton left me LOL and rolling my eyeballs back more than usual.
The topic was a staple for talk radio hosts: why aren’t Canadian children doing as well as other students around the world in internat…

TJ's Gift Foundation was created after the murder of my son, TJ, on January 5, 2003. TJ had been involved with drugs before he died and we felt, as a family, that we needed to do something to try to help kids make better choices to stay away from drugs. Kids are used to most parents, teachers, police and other adults telling them to stay away from drugs. However, this approach depends on student leaders teaching other kids about the dangers of drugs. It is not intended to replace other programs,…
