Beyond the 3Rs

City-TV reporter interviews student in Tanis Westdal's class.

It's World Teachers' Day again.

And while you won't find a Hallmark card to mark the event--which has rolled around every October 5 for a decade and a half now--it is a day to celebrate the work teachers do around the world and right here at home.

The global theme this year is "Building the Future." But here in Canada, we've been generating our own theme for the past few years. This year it's "Peace. Live it. Teach it." You can download the poster at the Canadian Teachers' Federation site. We've used the theme to highlight peace education and social justice issues.

And what a fitting theme it is. As Pat Isaak, president of The Manitoba Teachers' Society says,"World leaders often talk about peace on their stage. But teachers talk about peace on their stage everyday--in their classrooms."

Our local media coverage has been great. Pat did a super job on CJOB this morning on Hal Anderson's show. And Tanis Westdal, a socially conscious teacher from Churchill High School in Winnipeg, attracted a lot of attention engaging her Grade 7 and 8 in a "wants and needs" exercise on basic human rights--in honour of World Teachers' Day.

Tanis has been involved in writing the human rights curriculum for those grades and is piloting the Grade 7 curriculum in her classroom this year. When it comes to peace education, Tanis lives it and teaches it.

So, as a tribute to Manitoba teachers, here are the hits we have at the time of this posting.
