Beyond the 3Rs

We all have our own personal learning networks. You can enrich yours by connecting with other “Beyond the 3 Rs” participants before, during and after the conference. This social networking site is called a Ning (a Chinese word meaning "peace") and it will help you get to know fellow participants and share ideas, observations and resources that will really enhance your conference experience.

Cool things you can do on this Ning.

Join or start a discussion. The heart of this Ning beats in the discussion forum. Dive into a discussion that interests you or start one of your own. Session discussions have been set up for each of the conference keynotes and breakout sessions. You’ll want to gravitate to those to find areas of common interest, see who’s posting, and join in the conversations. But you’re free to start your own discussions on any educationally relevant topic. It’s your discussions that enrich the site and make it useful for everyone involved.

Dress up your own professional profile. Click on “My Page” once you’ve registered and let other members of the community know a bit about you and how they can get in touch with you. Your page can be customized. Add a profile photo. It can be a head and shoulders picture: it's always nice to put a face to a name. But it could also be your favourite spot at the lake, a pet, a couples or family photo--it's entirely up to you. It’s easy to do and gives your conversations a more personal feel.

Leave messages for each other. You'll notice you have an inbox right on the Ning, so you can easily send messages back and forth between your Beyond 3 Rs friends just by clicking on the photo of the friend you want to contact.

Write on others' comment walls. Each member's profile page has a wall that allows you to post messages for the user to see. You can use the comment wall for greeting someone who has just joined the group, or for leaving short, light messages for your friends. More private communication can be sent through your Ning email box, or by using the contact information members supply on their profile page.

Chat with each other. Click the “chat” tab and when you and at least one other member of the Ning are on the site at the same time, you can chat and get responses back in real time.

Post pictures and videos. Share photos and videos of your conference experience and areas of interest.

Start your own blog. When you registered on this Ning you got your own blog. If you feel like sharing your conference and education-related thoughts with fellow members, you're welcome to do so.

We hope you'll drop in often. There’s a lot to see and do—and your Beyond the 3 Rs professional development will start happening before we all meet and continue after the conference is over.

If you're interested. Here's a clear, concise video on the idea of social networking.
